What’s included

An advanced Scrum Master class

Flip chart drawing of the training purpose

Professional Scrum Master – Advanced (previously known as PSM II) is a 2-day certified advanced Scrum Master course designed to support Scrum Masters in their professional development. The PSM-A course is intended for Scrum Masters with at least one year of experience who are looking to grow their knowledge and abilities as a Scrum Master.

This course is one step in that journey. The course also includes a free attempt at the globally recognized Professional Scrum Master II (PSM II) certification exam.

Unlike the Professional Scrum Master (PSM) course which focuses on how to use Scrum, the Scrum framework and the role of the Scrum Master, PSM-A is an advanced course helping students to understand the stances that characterize an effective Scrum Master and servant-leader while diving deep into how they serve the Developers, Product Owner and organization. The course then teaches students about related practices and skills to enable them to have the right types of conversations and how to apply them to become better Scrum Masters.

What you will learn during the PSM-A course

Over the 2 days, students will learn about areas critical to growing as a successful Scrum Master such as how the principles and values of Scrum help guide Scrum Masters in the decisions they make and how the Scrum Master can help change the environment of Scrum Teams, creating an environment for agility to thrive. The Scrum Master role is complex. That’s why often, a Scrum Master must be able to apply different stances in order to be effective, such as:

  • Teacher
  • Coach & Mentor
  • Facilitator
  • Change Agent

As a Scrum Master, being able to identify, and effectively apply, which stance would benefit your team the most depending on the situation or circumstance could prove to be the key to the success of your team.

As a Scrum Master, part of your role is to help management and other stakeholders across your organization understand the benefits of Scrum and Agile. Therefore, it is imperative that you have the information and background that is needed to gain credibility in order to be an effective change agent.  Throughout the class I will provide stories, exercises, facilitation techniques (such as “Liberating Structures”), resources and more.

There will also be time in class for me to provide coaching on challenges that you and your classmates may be experiencing today or may in the future.

“Matthijs knows all about Scrum and finds great ways to spread his knowledge. It has been a wonderful experience to be in class and I benefit daily from the things he has taught me.”

Dave Woertman – Agile Coach

“Matthijs is without a doubt one of the best trainers. He not only has mastered all the theory behind Scrum, but he has vast experience in applying that knowledge in the enterprise world. In his training courses he doesn’t just spout the agile platitudes at you, but deals with the real-life messy business of applying agile ideals to the day to day work. Matthijs’ trainings are invaluable if you are planning to actually be agile instead of just learning about Scrum.”

My mission: inspiring others to discover new ways of working.

I have provided 100+ training courses and workshops in the fields of Scrum, Agile Product Development, and Kanban. Over the years, I have advised and coached organizations within various industries from banking to healthcare. Before becoming an external consultant, trainer, and coach, I have been 5+ years part of different Scrum Teams. During that time I have gained experience as a Developer, Product Owner, and Scrum Master.

As an official licensed Professional Scrum Trainer (PST) I am trusted by the creators of Scrum to create the best possible foundation you can build on in practice.

Organizations hire me to help them to find better ways of working that lead to improvements in business agility and an increase in the delivery of business value.

Before I became a Scrum Master, I have been a software developer for over fifteen years. After that I have been working as a business analyst for over ten years. During those years I realized we can’t predict the future. We can try and expect that things will go as planned, but mostly they don’t. So when you make a plan, take into account that everything can change and that a Sense and Respond way of acting works much better and is actually a natural way of working.

It is my passion to help people and organizations (re)learn this natural way of working. I do that by coaching people on the job, and as a Professional Scrum Trainer (PST) at by teaching (aspiring) Scrum Masters how they can help other people discover this natural way of working again.

Class room experience

Our training courses are characterized by minimizing use of Powerpoint slides. Instead, we maximize the use of visualizations on flip charts. Static Powerpoint presentations often force a class to adapt their learning to the way the slidedeck was developed. In our approach, we let go of these static slidedecks. This enables us to adapt content we are sharing to the conversation that is actually taking place. We have received great feedback on how our use of a flexible drawing style contributed to an outstanding learning experience. These visualizations will help you recollect the lessons learned through the exercises we did, the conversations we had, and your reflections throughout the training course.

Small class sizes

My training courses have a maximum of 10 students. This has the following benefits for you:

  • A more personal experience for you as a student
  • Contributes to an environment of trust and openness
  • Easier for everyone to feel comfortable
  • More space to bring in your own challenges from your workplace
  • More space to learn from the experience of the other students
